What is the Toyota Safety Sense System?

This advanced integrated safety system helps to keep you and your passengers protected and out of harm's way. Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) is offered in two packages: Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) which is for compact vehicles, and Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) which can be found on midsize and large Toyota vehicles like the 2017 Toyota Highlander and 2017 Toyota RAV4.

Which features are included in the Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) Package?

Toyota Safety Sense™ C provides drivers with three active safety technologies that use a combination of camera and laser technologies to help in the prevention and mitigation of collisions. The Toyota Safety Sense™ C includes a Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beams. Vehicles like the 2017 Toyota Prius and 2017 Toyota Yaris feature TSS-C.

Pre-Collision System

Using an in-vehicle camera and laser, this system detects if there is a car in your vehicle's intended path. The Pre-Collision System (PCS) determines if the possibility of frontal collision is high and prompts the driver to take action, via audible and visual alerts. Once the driver reacts and hits the brakes, the system can provide additional brake force using Brake Assist, or if no action is taken by the driver and the system determines that a frontal collision is eminent, it can automatically apply the brakes.

Lane Departure Alert

Helping to maintain a safe driving path by alerting the driver with audio and visual warnings, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) determines when the vehicle is unintentionally deviating from the lane it is traveling in. You can safely steer back to the center of the lane, avoiding potential danger.

Automatic High Beams

This safety system is designed to help drivers to see more of what's ahead, without making it difficult for other motorists on the road to see. Using an in-vehicle camera, this system detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles, automatically switching between high and low beams when called for. Automatic High Beams (AHB) can aid in earlier detection of obstacles, pedestrians and other vehicles in your path.

Which features are included in the Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) Package

By combining an in-vehicle camera and front-grille-mounted radar, the Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) suite of features help you remain well protected on every drive. This suite of active safety technologies includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection function, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function, Automatic High Beams and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. You can find this technology in the 2017 Toyota Avalon and the 2017 Toyota Corolla.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection function

The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection function (PCP w/PD) can detect if a pedestrian is in your vehicle's path using the in-vehicle camera, and it prompts the driver take action to brake by emitting an audio and visual alert. Brake Assist may be provided if the driver reacts in time and brakes, or the system may apply the brakes automatically.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function

In addition to the Lane Departure Alert functions, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA) can provide corrective steering when it detects if the vehicle is veering out of its lane unintentionally. Steering Assist provides small corrective input to the steering wheel to keep the vehicle in its lane.

Automatic High Beams

The Automatic High Beams (AHB) safety system is found on both TSS-C and TSS-P packages. See more of what's ahead of you on the road without blinding other drivers with your high beams. This system automatically switches from high to low beams by detecting other drivers in your vehicle's path.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

Functioning in the conventional sense of cruise control with the added assurance of distance control mode, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) uses radar to detect and determine preceding vehicles' distance. Helping you to maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and other vehicles in your path, this system automatically decelerates, without canceling cruise control. If the vehicle traveling in front of you substantially reduces speed, the system may apply the brakes and alert the driver using audio and visual warnings. When the vehicle traveling slower than your Toyota is no longer in your path, the system accelerates to the set speed of driving.
